Field Visit in Strasbourg

In early July 2021, floodplain managers from the Eurométropole de Strasbourg and members of the research team met on the field to discuss about river restoration and flood mitigation projects.

Anna Serra-Llobet, Carine Heitz and Ludovic Drapier did field work on three projects implemented by the Eurométropole de Strasbourg (EMS) that aim at reducing flood risk in urban areas near Strasbourg while restoring the aquatic environment. Employees from the River Restoration and Water-Related Risks Division at the EMS showed three sites north of Strasbourg. At Eckwersheim, the group visited a project which includes a stream restoration project and the construction of a small dam to protect the village from flooding. At Vendenheim they visited the site of an ongoing project that aims at creating a flood retention area while improving the riparian habitat. Finally, they walked along a small section of the Souffel River at Reichstett. This area was restored near a decade ago. This project is featured in an IUCN publication as an example of NbS.
